Murals tour in Orgosolo
At the Heart of a Rebellious Culture
Orgosolo has a story to discover through the numerous murals that cover the walls of its houses. The muralist tradition belongs to many Sardinian villages, but here it has become an integral part of the local identity. It all began in 1969, when the entire community rebelled against the central government’s decision to establish a military base on public lands. The villagers—not only men but also children, women, and the elderly—carried out a collective protest that lasted several days, occupying the land and forcing the military to withdraw. Since then, Orgosolo has been known as the village of rebels.
The “spiritual father” of Orgosolo’s muralism is Francesco del Casino, a middle school art teacher who, with his students, helped promote this form of expression. His works are recognizable by their Cubism-inspired style.
The murals tour starts from Piazza dei Caduti and primarily runs along the Corso, but even the more secluded streets hold works that deserve attention. Venturing off the main path can lead to interesting discoveries. The tour is also available aboard an Ape Calessino.
Muralism Workshops
Teresa Podda, along with other local artists, organizes muralism workshops, also open to children and teenagers. After visiting the murals, participants can paint their own on panels, following their inspiration and with the expert guidance of a local artist.
