Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption
OVERVIEW
In the historic center, surrounded by trees and stone walls, stands the Church of Nostra Sennora, also known as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption. Built in 1634 on the remains of an even older religious structure, it houses one of the town’s most cherished symbols of faith: the statue of the Sleeping Madonna, kept in a gilded wooden and glass case.
The white façade is simple and harmonious, topped by a small bell gable. A granite portal and two large niches, now empty, add character to the front. The interior, also whitewashed, is divided into three naves marked by round and pointed arches, creating a space defined by clean, luminous lines.
Every year on August 15th, this is where Orgosolo celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption, a deeply felt and well-attended event that blends spirituality and tradition. The statue of the Sleeping Madonna is carried in a procession through the streets of the village, followed by a parade of groups in traditional dress and a horse race, Sa Vardia, which fills the town with energy and passion.
Through sacred rites and lively celebrations, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption reflects the profound bond between Orgosolo and its identity.
