Country Church of Saints Ananias and Giles

OVERVIEW

A few kilometers from Orgosolo, nestled in the tranquility of the countryside, stands the rural church dedicated to Saints Giles and Ananias, locally known as Santu Naniu and Santu Zìliu. This sacred building, located in an area deeply connected to the religious history of the region, features a typical architecture, simple and in harmony with the surrounding environment. The façade is adorned with stone decorations and details that reveal the meeting point between folk art and devotion. Inside, frescoes from different periods tell a long tradition of faith and bear witness to the importance this place has held for the Christian community over the centuries. The church is dedicated to two saints considered native, two Roman soldiers who, according to tradition, converted to Christianity and were martyred right here in these mountains in 310 AD. Local legend links their sacrifice to the prolonged clash between the Sardinian pagan religion and the new Christian faith. Every year, on the first or second Sunday of June, the community celebrates their feast. It is a heartfelt occasion that combines a solemn mass, a procession in traditional dress, and a horse race. Not far from the church, in the locality of Ovadduthai, lies the site of the martyrdom of Blessed Antonia Mesina, who was killed in 1935 while resisting an attempted assault. Every May 17th, a commemorative ceremony takes place here, blending silence, walking, and remembrance.
