Su Gorropu Canyon
OVERVIEW
The Su Gorropu Gorge marks the natural boundary between the territories of Orgosolo and Urzulei, in the Supramonte region. It is one of the deepest formations on the island, with cliffs reaching up to 500 meters, enclosing an environment full of contrasts.
From the Orgosolo side, the gorge can be reached by following a trail that crosses the Montes Forest. The path starts near the Nuraghe Mereu and gradually descends through holm oak woods, ancient sheepfolds, and springs until it reaches the bed of the Flumineddu stream.
The route alternates between wooded sections, rocky passages, and open views over the valley. There are no facilities or tourist signage, and the setting invites you to slow down, observe, and follow the pace of the land. Along the way, it’s possible to encounter typical Supramonte species such as the Gorropu columbine and, with some luck, the Sardinian cave salamander.
The descent requires good fitness and appropriate footwear. Once you reach the gorge, the landscape changes again: large limestone blocks, muffled sounds, and vertical walls flanking the river’s course. From the Orgosolo side, access to Su Gorropu Gorge is wilder and less frequented.
This excursion demands time, care, and respect for the environment. For those wishing to venture deeper and move with greater safety, it is always recommended to rely on expert local guides.
